Final journal entry - a walk thru the village

4/28/2011

This final week’s journal entry asked us to take a walk and to try to clear our mind of internal thoughts and just use our 5 senses to observe our surroundings and then return to record our observations and to see if God had altered our perception at all.

I took a walk during mid-afternoon to the Post Office and back…not a very long walk, but I took my time.  For the most part, I didn’t observe much new, but there were a few surprises.  The road was pretty quiet yesterday, so only one SUV and a couple of four-wheelers passed me.  The weather was overcast and there was a slight warm breeze.  I tried to be aware of my 5 senses, and this is what I observed:

Touch – as the weather has been warming up, it feels good to be outside.  The snow is melting and leaves puddles and mud many places.  The feeling of mud on my boots is a welcome change from ice and snow.  The warm breeze is refreshing, as opposed to the chilling breeze of winter which sometimes takes your breath away.

Smell – I never really spent much time trying to smell Unalakleet.  Mostly it smells fresh and promising.  However, passing the dog lot was not very refreshing.  The melting snow is revealing the dogs’ business.  Seems like there is a sermon in that observation somewhere…or at least a youth talk.

Taste – I didn’t taste anything in particular, but I did think about eating when I passed by the village restaurant.  In the summer time, there will be many more things to taste as we go into the tundra.

Sound – I enjoyed hearing very few sounds as I walked down the quiet road.  A dog barked here or there, but nothing obnoxious.  The one thing that I did hear a lot of was seagulls.  A week ago you would have heard no seagulls.  The only birds you might have encountered were ravens or snow buntings.  No seagulls and geese are flying home for the summer.  Seagulls are a sound of anticipation of a great summer!

Sight – I saw all of the normal village sights I normally do; houses, vehicles, businesses, the road, etc.  As I walked, the few people I saw out waved to me as I waved to them.  Although there was nothing out of the ordinary, it is still exciting for me to look around the village and the beautiful location we have by the hills, the river, and the ocean.
