Fun Alaska Trivia

•The tallest mountain (20,320 ft.) in North America-Mt. Denali, is in AK

•AK was purchased from Russia in 1867 for under 2 cents per acre (not a bad deal!)

•The AK state flower is the forget-me-not

•The state bird is the Alaska Willow Ptarmigan

•The largest King Salmon caught in AK was 97.4 lbs--caught in the Kenai River, just down the street from where we live

•AK has more than 300,000 million lakes!

•There are more than 100,000 glaciers in AK

•Mid-summer, about 1/3 of AK gets 24 hrs of sunlight

•Mid-winter, about 1/3 of AK gets 24 hrs of darkness

•AK is 2 times the size of Texas

•AK is the only state that has coastlines on three major bodies of water: the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Bering Sea

Alaska’s official state sport is Dog Mushing.  Multiple professional races are held throughout the winter, building toward the Iditarod, “The Last Great Race,” which starts in March.

•In 2009, Alaska celebrates it’s 50th year as a state. January 3rd, 1959 was the official day Alaska became a state.


•An average of 900,000 sockeye (red) salmon enter the Kenai River annually

•Alaska is home to over 130 volcanoes.  Over 50 of those volcanoes have been active in recent history.  In the past 200 years, 75% of all eruptive volcanoes in the USA have been in Alaska.
